The Gibson Varitone circuit is one of my favorite tone-shaping tools. They do get a bad rap, but I love 'em, as did B.B. King and Freddie King. A couple of years ago, I decided to dig into the circuit to try and figure out why some sounded great and others not so much. Part 1 of this series requires a little reading homework. In 2010, Chris Wargo wrote a paper titled The Gibson Varitone - Where’s the Disconnect?, and it is still one of the best jump off points for understanding what the circuit does and how it works.
Enjoy!
